Happenings in the Fall

These last weeks have been keeping us running. We just got done having a women's concentration at our church in which we had an attendance of over three hundred women. The seminars at the concentration challenged the ladies about motherhood and the importance of putting the Lord first in their matrimony and family.

Today we had the kick off the bi-annual ophthalmology brigade at the Amistad Hospital which is carried out by the World Cataract Foundation. It was fun to see many of the church youth aiding some of the 1200 patients by escorting them to the appropriate places in the Hospital. About 200 of these patients will receive surgery this week, and hopefully more will receive the Gospel of Christ.

Looking ahead, please keep our youth camp in your prayers. It is a time during which God allows us to take about 80 young people to the beach for a three day camp. Please pray that God will give wisdom to the leaders, and an open heart to the campers.

Praises:
In July a group from SOI came down and helped with VBS. They were a wonderful help with sports and games. There were about 180-200 children and helpers involved in VBS. PTL
We have now started to have family clubs in different neighborhoods throughout the city to try to reach the families of the new children that attended VBS. In the house where Tim and I had our club, there were about five families represented. The children sang songs that they learned in Bible School and the adults were able to participate in the Bible study with their children as well as do a craft.

Missionary camp started July 26th. Last week the campers were in training and now they are at the three different projects. Susie’s project is working with a church in Acapulco this week along with 5 other young campers. They will do VBS, Bibles studies, mimes, sports outreaches, etc. The other two projects are with our missions in Cochapa and Pinotepa.

Next Monday an English teacher arrives to help teaching this fall. Bethany Long is from Texas and we are looking forward to her time here working at the Colegio R. Carey Brenton.

School starts around the last week of this month and we are gearing up with teachers meetings and preparations for classes. We praise the Lord for His faithfulness. Once again we were able to lead in the academics in this area of Ometepec and much of the state of Guerrero.

Prayer Requests:
Prayer for the missionary campers on their projects: Acapulco, Cochapa, and Pinotepa.
Pray for the school, the teachers, director, and the new students. Pray for Bethany. Please pray for me (Barbara) as I am in charge of training the teachers. In a couple of weeks we will have the teachers training courses.
Pray for the church especially the family clubs that will go on for about 5 more weeks.
Please pray for Tim this week as he works with the missionary campers on their projects.

Praises:
In March the youth camp and the children's camps had about 90 campers. The children learned how to be "Special Agents" for Christ. The youth had a wonderful time at the beach and were challenged to live for Christ.

Also in March a series of home Bible Studies were started. (For four weeks) There were about 20 studies going on around Ometepec.

In April we were pleased that the youth soccer team took 1st place in the championship.

We also received the results for the school testing in April. Once again the Colegio R. Carey Brenton took first place in this region.

Praise the Lord for our Sunday School teachers. This week we had a barbacue with them at the Wood house. There was some great fellowship.

This month the men's meetings started up again.

Praise the Lord our son, Andy, finished his first year of college and is with us for the summer. Pray for his health.

Prayer Requests:
Pray for Ben Johnson and his family. They will be moving to Ometepec in July of this year to work with the sports ministry. We are really excited!

Pray for Pastor Lorenzo who is pastoring our mission in Pinotepa. Pray for church growth and health for him and his wife.

Praise the Lord!

The Christmas program at the church had an attendance of about 250 people. After the service we had a potluck.

The Youth Camp was a big success. There were about 80 youth from the age of 15 to university age. Although our guest speaker couldn’t make it (due to illness), many others such as Pastor Germain, Josh, Nathan, Pastor Tim, and Eliel stepped up to the plate and it was wonderful.

Even though Susi’s birthday is in June, she waited to celebrate her 15^th party with her brothers. We all pitched in and were also touched by the help and love shown to make her party a success. Fifteen year old parties here are a big deal. There was an attendance between 250-300 people at the banquet.

Maranatha Soccer Ministry

Everyone in Ometepec loves soccer! Because of this the Maranatha Soccer Ministry has been able to plant the Seed in the hearts of many. The Maranatha Soccer Ministry is a unique door to the Gospel.

In Mexico and especially Ometepec, soccer is a big deal. Mexico has its own national league and everyone you talk to has a favorite national team. I have never been to place in Mexico where its people don't play pick up soccer games in the afternoon. Every afternoon in Ometepec, you can find more than 100 people playing soccer. The sports center in Ometepec is one of the most popular places in town. There are more than three different leagues in Ometepec. Soccer in Mexico is a dig deal.

Often in churches there are many more women and children than there are men and young men. Where are these men and young men? Out playing soccer or at home watching soccer. How can one reach out to them? By getting involved in soccer.

The Vision of the Maranatha Soccer Ministry is just that: Reaching passionate, skilled, athletic men. This last season Maranatha had a Veterans team (Tim played on this team) a First division team (Nate and Josh played on this team) a Second division team (Andy played on this team) a High School team and a Children team. Many men played this season on the Marantha teams and through these teams have had contact with the amazing life changing message of the Gospel. The Gospel message is spread on these teams at half time with a small devotional thought, before the game with a prayer, through one day outings but mostly through the loving, geunine interest of the coach (Poli) and director (Tim) in the lives of the Maranatha players and their determination to play clean and play right.

Colegio Almirante R. Carey Brenton

In the field of education in the area around Ometepec, there is a great need for quality education. Many people that desire a good education for their children sent them to the nearest metropolis to seek high school and even junior high educations. Many of these people believe they have no choice so they allow their children to leave home in the years when their children need them most!

Having analyzed the need for better education in Ometepec and the region, the Almirante R. Carey Brenton Jr. High has been opened. Through the Carey Brenton Jr. High, Ometepec and its surrounding areas are ministered to. Many of the students are considered to be future leaders in Mexico. The ministry opportunity in education is immense. The students receive an integrated instruction and witness the wonderful examples of their teachers eight hours a day, five days a week.

The Carey Brenton Jr. High was first opened in the 2006-2007 school year. The Director, Eliel Galindo, is a Mexican lawyer of great wisdom, and comes with years of experience in administration. Barb serves as the Academic Director, choosing the curriculum and maintaining the quality of the other eight Mexican teachers that work at the school, and also teaches English. The Carey Brenton is a private school. Since there is a cost involved, parents and students value of the education that the students are receiving. The Colegio R. Carey Brenton Junior High School is an institution with an integrated, high quality education. The School advertises integrated education because its vision is to involve God in all subjects of life: God is the the creator science,the protagonist of history, the mastermind behind math, the author of Spanish and English, the key to understanding ethics, the and the ultimate ruler of government. Truth be told it is impossible to not integrate God in all subjects of life!

This years graduating class, the class of 2009, will be the first class to have attended all three years at the Carey Brenton. Please continue to pray each of the Carey Brenton students, and also for strength and wisdom for each of the teachers. Also keep in your prayers the financial situation of the school as it starts to support itself. Please especially pray for volunteer English teachers who are willing to come and teach English for a school year.

Camp Ministries on "Lagunita Beach" in Mexico

The "Campamento Regional de la Costa Chica" is an amazing ministry! Many different groups of people have enjoyed the sand, food, swimming and wonderful fellowship that the camp has provided. Lives have been touched, and people have made a lifechanging desicions at camp.

With great blessings and heavenly satisfaction, as labourers we can look back to the 10 years since the first youth camp and see how God has manifested himself and expanded the vision. The vision started as a camp for youth on Christmass Vacation and now has expanded to include a Children's Camp and Intermediate Camp over Easter Vacation, and a Family Overnight Camp in May.

Even though the Camp Facilities are quite rustic, we enjoy them and look forward to expanding the facilities at every opportunity. Currently the camp facilities include rustic cement bathrooms and showers, a large roofed area that we call The Dinner and roofed and floored hut that serves as The Kitchen. The most urgent project is the roofing of the bathrooms and showers, we are trusting the Lord for the material, time and energy to complete this great project.

Iglesia "Puerta de Salvacion"

The church has been an amazing blessing for everyone involved. The vision of our church is: To be a Missionary Church that shows the joy of the Lord. With this vision integrated into their daily living, Tim, the pastor, and the whole church continue to joyfully spread the love of Christ in this region "la Costa Chica."

From Closing of-Life in Community- Campaign

The church"-Puerta de Salvación(Door of Salvation) la Mira-" celebrated its twelfth anniversary this year. God has been able to manifest himself mightily in our Church. Twelve years ago a small group of eighteen people began coming together under a tree. Today, the Church recently had to switch to a double service on Sunday mornings because the sanctuary isn't big enough to hold the whole congregation. Many lives have been changed, many challenges overcome, many prayers raised at this "Door of Salvation" in Ometepec.

The church has been the base of the Wood Ministry. Tim's ministry as pastor definitely occupies most of his time, Barb has been actively involved in the women's group, as a Sunday School teacher and co-director, greeter and many other odds and ends. Andy and Susie are involved in musical worship, youth group, running the projector and being the pastor's kids. Most of the other ministries Soccer, the Colegio(School), Camps and Hospital Chaplaincy are outreaches that introduce people to the gospel but growth comes mainly from participating in church. The "Door of Salvation" has for many people truly been an entrance into a better life in Jesus Christ.
